The 2403 mega senaCongressional Cemetery has buried many of Washington's elite, from the first FBI director to members of Congress. But one of the largest plots belongs to Mary Ann Hall, who ran a high-end brothel just steps from the US Capitol for 40 years. Known as the Madam on the Mall, she started out as a prostitute herself, earning enough money to buy land and erect a 3-4 story building. Business boomed during the Civil War, though Hall was eventually found guilty of "keeping a bawdy house." Little is known about her, but artifacts found at the site in the mid-90s - now the home of the National Museum of the American Indian - reveal some clues.
